The Rooftop Film Club: Peckham

A Few weeks ago my friends and I went to The Rooftop Film Club in Peckham to see Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot!

It was a beautiful Summers evening and the heat was overpowering as we climbed the many flights of stairs to the top of the Bussey Building. The views from the top are totally worth it, with the City rising up like a little toy town in the distance on one side and leafy East Dulwitch looking green and pretty on the other.

As the name suggests, The Rooftop Film Club is an open air cinema! Red and white striped deck chairs are set out neatly in rows and there is a bar dishing out some lovely cocktails and delicious Pistonhead lager as well as the usual bevs. There is also a grill serving up Aberdeen Angus Burgers (which come with chorizo and lovely home made hot salsa as well as a grilled prawn!) or a burrito if that's your bag.

When it's time for the film to start everyone gets given a set of wireless headphones and a slanket and it's time to snuggle up on deck chairs to watch the show! There's something so romantic about an open air cinema - it makes me wish we had drive in movie theatres here in little old England!

I'd tried to watch Some Like It Hot on the telly at home once before and found it old fashioned and sort of silly -  I could only watch the first half hour or so and then gave up on it. Projected onto the big screen though the acting just sparkles and the physical comedy comes across so much more. It reminded me of when the BFI  were showing a series of Charlie Chaplin films a few years ago - watching them in the cinema you suddenly see how wonderful the acting is and how clever the storyline, they're really funny and touching at the same time, if you ever get the chance to see them at Le Cinema I urge you to go!
